Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Seton Medical Center helps restore the cardiac patient to optimal function for activities of daily living, recreation, and employment. This program is designed for patients who are suffering from angina, or recovering from heart attack, angioplasty, stent or heart surgery. Through patient/family education and progressive, supervised exercise, the program can help bring patients back to the highest possible level of physical and mental well-being, reduce risk factors, and start patients on a long-term health maintenance program.
Each referred patient receives an initial interview that includes current lifestyle habits related to risk factors, diet, activities, and exercise. The exercise component includes progressive exercise training, using exercise of the lower and upper body, and the exercise intensity is individualized. Progress reports are sent to referring physicians upon follow-up visits by the patient.
The exercise routines include:
- Treadmill
- Bicycle ergometer
- Arm ergometer
- Rowing machine
- Wall pulleys
- Stairmaster stepping device
- Shoulder wheel
- Hand weights
- Stretching
- Hydrofitness
- Flexibility routines
Patients are also encouraged to attend educational classes which cover such topics as:
- Nutrition
- Risk factor management
- Stress management
- Exercise and the heart
- Medications
- Weight Control
- Group support sessions for the spouse or significant other
- The exercise and educational components of our cardiac rehabilitation program return the patient to full activity and help build a healthy lifestyle
The Healthy Heart Program
The Healthy Heart Program is a supervised exercise program designed for individuals with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, or breathing problems such as asthma. Along with the exercise component, participants are encouraged to attend free weekly education classes addressing exercise, nutrition, stress management, and disease prevention. Outpatient Congestive Heart Failure Program
The Outpatient Congestive Heart Failure Program provides assessment, education, support and monitored, supervised exercise for persons with congestive heart failure.
The goals of the program are to enable you to:
- Understand the anatomy and physiology of heart failure
- Understand tools that will help you attain your highest level of physical and emotional well-being
- Understand proper medication used
- Understand dietary needs
- Monitor daily weight and symptoms, identify worsening, and know when to report these changes to your physician
- Partner with your physician to manage your heart failure effectively.
Group classes include:
- Risk factor control
- Healthy heart nutrition
- Exercise overview and home exercise program
- Stress management
- Medications
- Weight Control
