This program is an opportunity available for the New RN Graduates to participate in the training program to ease their transition from a student to a new licensed practicing professional. The training program is offered twice per year. The length of the program is eight weeks of didactic classroom setting and clinical bedside experience with your own preceptor, and followed by a long-term relationship with a mentor from your new unit.
During the eight week training period, the new grad nurse will begin with hospital orientation to Seton Medical Center. The new nurse will learn about the mission and values of Seton, quality assurance program, workplace safety policies, new benefits, and other general information. The new nurse will go through nursing orientation within the first few days at Seton which will include hospital and nursing policies and procedures, pain assessment and management, restraints, respiratory protocols, restraints, wound care, IV therapy, and hands-on demonstration of medical equipment. Didactic education classes taught by the Clinical Nurse Educators, Diabetic Nurse Educator, Staff Nurses, Respiratory Care Practitioners, and other Healthcare Practioners include review of the systems, pathophysiology, and diseases associated with the various systems. Clinical experience include introduction to the primary unit and various other clinical settings as deemed necessary. The new grad nurse will be allowed time to gradually assume the duties and responsibilities which accompany the new role under the direct guidance and supervision of a preceptor and other members of the healthcare team.
The new grad nurse will be assigned to a primary unit and may be assigned to the work schedule desired to maintain a schedule consistent with that of the primary preceptor. Every effort will be made to have a primary and secondary preceptor for the new grad nurse to assure consistency and continuity throughout the training process.
As adult learner, new grad nurse’s active participation in their learning and identification of their learning needs and seek out guidance to meet needs is expected. Preceptors and other healthcare team members are committed to providing an individualized and flexible training. It is our goal to prepare the new grad nurse to meet the needs of patients and families, develop skills needed to function independently as a staff nurse, and to reduce anxiety associated with transition to staff nurses.
